Route 47 Bridge over Grassy Sound closed to marine traffic due to excessive heat, but reopens

LOWER TOWNSHIP — The Route 47 Bridge over Grassy Sound between Wildwood and Lower Township was temporarily closed to marine traffic because of excessive heat while Route 47/Wildwood Boulevard remained open for vehicles.

The bridge reopened for marine traffic later on Thursday.

The excessive heat has caused the expansion of some components on the bridge, which prohibits the bridge from opening to allow marine traffic to pass. In the closed position, the bridge has 28 feet of clearance over mean high water. Vessels that can transit safely under the bridge may do so. The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified.

The closure of the bridge to marine traffic was expected to last until 7 a.m. Saturday, July 18, when conditions are forecasted to improve, but conditions improved earlier to the bridge resumed normal operations for marine traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
