WEST CAPE MAY — The Arbor Day Foundation has named the Borough of West Cape May a 2026 Tree City USA, in honor of its commitment to plant, grow and maintain trees to benefit its community.
“Over the past several years, the Shade Tree Commission of West Cape May has planted more than 140 trees on private property,” Mayor George Dick said. “It has received a grant to plant 42 trees along the borough right of way and distributed more than 6,200 saplings to residents and school children. We would like to thank the Shade Tree Commission members, who gave more than 780 volunteer hours to the borough last year.”
“For five decades, Tree City USA has rallied passionate local leaders to enhance the livability and sustainability of their communities. Tree champions like West Cape May are leading the way in a growing movement to shape a better future with trees and action,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees are critical infrastructure, building resiliency and fostering good health in our nation’s cities. We’re proud West Cape May is among the Arbor Day Foundation’s growing network of communities dedicated to creating positive impact through trees.”
There are many benefits to a robust treescape. Trees provide shade in hot weather, beautify neighborhoods, improve air quality, reduce flooding, lower energy costs and create a habitat for wildlife.
Trees can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs for homes and businesses by providing shade in the summer and wind protection in the winter. Additionally, trees help manage stormwater runoff, reduce flooding and prevent soil erosion.
To earn Tree City USA recognition, a city must uphold four core standards including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and participating in an Arbor Day celebration.
The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program is operated in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Visit arborday.org to learn more about the program or how to apply.
