NORTH CAPE MAY – The Evoy Funeral Home had the honor of attending to the arrangements for Phillip E. Smith, a proud American hero whose life was defined by sacrifice, dedication and service to others.
Phill was laid to rest May 21 with the honor he so deeply deserved.
He served in the U.S. Army, completing three overseas tours, one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan, and upon his return joined the National Guard.
Phill, 41, who died suddenly May 8, 2026, continued his service to the people of New Jersey as a State Trooper for more than 10 years.
On May 21, the day included a visit from N.J. State Police Superintendent Lt. Col. Jeanne Hengemuhle, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, a moving tribute by event guitarist Brandt Jacobus, and the presence of many notable dignitaries.
More than 100 New Jersey State Troopers, members of Phill’s Army platoon, and countless friends and family members came together to pay their respects.
Fellow Troopers ensured the procession – from the funeral home through Rio Grande to the Veterans Cemetery in Cape May Court House – was carried out with dignity and safety.
Phill’s bravery and sacrifice were recognized through his awards, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars.
We will never forget Phillip E. Smith – his service, his strength and the legacy he leaves behind, a spokesperson for the funeral home said. “Rest easy, Trooper. Your watch is complete.”
