Road closures, detours, parking restrictions set for triathlon

VILLAS — On June 7, 2026, the 13th annual Escape the Cape Triathlon will take place at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lower Township.

There will be two events taking place simultaneously. The “Sprint” triathlon consists of a .35-mile swim, 12-mile bike and a 5K run and the “Olympic” triathlon consists of a 1-mile swim, 23-mile bike and 5-mile run. All 2,000 athletes will begin the event by leaping off the ferry into Delaware Bay and swimming ashore. There will be road closures and detours for the cycling and running portions of the event.

All persons living along the following roads and areas can expect road closures, detours and delays between 5:20 and 11 a.m.: Jonathan Hoffman Road, Seashore Road south of the canal, West Cape May bridge, New England Road sSouth of the canal, Bayshore Road south of the canal, Stimpson Lane, Shunpike Road south of the canal, Lincoln Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue (North Cape May), Emerson Avenue, Beach Drive  (North Cape May) Shore Road (Town Bank) and Channel Apartments.

Additionally, Douglass Park will be closed. 

Residents of Jonathan Hoffman Road should expect heavy bike traffic along Sandman Boulevard/Route 9 from about 7 to 9:30 a.m. Those who need to leave their home during this time must use Shunpike Road. Police will assist those trying to exit. The intersection at Seashore Road and Bayshore Road will be completely closed.

Residents of New England Road who must leave their home due to extreme circumstances should call (609) 886-2711 to be safely escorted off the triathlon course.

Residents along the bayfront should expect heavy bike traffic from Lincoln Boulevard to Emerson Avenue from 7 to 11 a.m. and heavy runner traffic from Emerson to Pinewood Road and from Mallow to Springtime Road from 7:45 to 11 a.m.

Parking is prohibited on Beach Drive, Shore Road and the race route. Residents are urged to park on adjacent side streets not to block driveways or intersections. 

Also, homeowners along the route are asked to remove trash cans from the street. 

Residents living south of the canal between Bayshore and Seashore road should expect heavy bike traffic from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Those who need to leave their home should call (609) 886-2711 for an escort.
