John Thomas White, known affectionately as “John the Barber” to his friends and Pop/Cappy to his family, passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2025, at the age of 93 in Cape May.
Born Oct. 14, 1932, in Philadelphia, John’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, generosity and passion.
John’s early years were spent in Philadelphia, where he attended North Catholic High School, and Cape May in the summer, where he was a lifeguard.
His thirst for knowledge and commitment to service led him to LaSalle University, but his education was interrupted by a call to serve his country. John answered that call with honor, serving in the Army in the Korean War, then the Coast Guard, and demonstrating the courage and dedication that would become hallmarks of his character.
After his military service, John stayed in New Jersey, where he became a pillar of the Cape May community as the owner and operator of John’s Barbershop for an impressive 62 years.
His establishment was more than a place for a haircut; it was a hub of camaraderie and storytelling, where John’s quick wit and one-liners were as sharp as his scissors.
John’s Christian faith was a guiding light throughout his life, providing him with strength and solace. He lived his beliefs through his actions, always ready to lend a helping hand and share his blessings with others.
An adventurous spirit, John’s younger years saw him soaring the skies as a pilot, a hobby that spoke to his love of freedom and exploration. His passion for mechanics shone through in his meticulous restoration of vintage cars, a pastime that combined his technical skill with an appreciation for history.
John’s joy in driving officials in Cape May parades was a sight to behold, as he proudly showcased his gleaming automotive treasures.
Family was the cornerstone of John’s life. He was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas and Eddie, but his legacy lives on through his loving wife, Antonia Muscatello, and their two sons, Geno (Suzan) and Anthony (Laura).
John was a cherished grandfather to Anthony (Mary) White and Jennifer (Ivo) Krakic, and a doting great-grandfather to Amelia White and Lina Krakic.
His love for his family was boundless, and he instilled in them the values of kindness, humor and a zest for life. John’s memory will be forever cherished by those who knew him.
His loving nature, generosity and passionate spirit made him a beloved figure in the lives of many. As we bid farewell to John Thomas White, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of laughter, love and the joy of a good joke.
His stories and one-liners will continue to echo in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy will endure in the community he served so well.
