West Cape May honors Sabo for service, ‘steadfast integrity’

WEST CAPE MAY — Borough Commission honored Mayor Carol Sabo on Dec. 10 for more than a decade of service to West Cape May.

Deputy Mayor George Dick read a proclamation recognizing Sabo, who was appointed commissioner in 2013 and held the position for four years. She was re-elected in 2017, when she was chosen by her peers to serve as mayor, then re-elected in 2021.

“She has faithfully served the borough of West Cape May, demonstrating steadfast integrity and commitment to public service,” Dick read from the proclamation.

Sabo chose not to seek re-election in 2025, instead mounting an unsuccessful campaign for a seat in the state Legislature.

“It has been my privilege to serve West Cape May,” Sabo said. “I can’t imagine a better place to live, work and grow up because I was 24 when I moved here.”

“This has been a long time for Carol,” Dick said. “She has the best interests in the borough. She’s kind-hearted and compassionate.”

The borough’s reorganization meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 5, when two new commissioners will be seated and a new mayor chosen from among the group.

Dick, Susan Hoffman and Ellen McDevitt out-polled their four opponents in the Borough Commission election, winning four-year terms.

Hoffman collected the most votes, 353, followed by Dick with 349 and McDevitt with 334.

Incumbent Jack Antonicello garnered 251 votes, followed by Dawn Vitagliano with 200, Hamilton Wilde with 196  and Joseph Gilmartin with 181.

Dick recognized Antonicello for his service to the borough.

“I want to thank Jack for his two years of service,” he said. “While we didn’t always agree, we appreciate your enthusiasm and effort.”

In other news, commissioners discussed the sale of hemp-infused beverages at Sunset Liquors. Solicitor Frank Corrado said the borough learned it is legal to do so, but only through November 2026 due to a loophole in federal law that made intoxicating hemp legal for that period of time.
