CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Zoological Society has announced a fundraising campaign to help the Cape May County Park & Zoo build a world-class habitat for Humboldt penguins and Chilean flamingos.
The habitat would be constructed at the site of the former World of Birds Aviary and provide a home for 20 penguins and 30 flamingos.
According to a news release, the new habitat is designed to reflect the natural environments of these incredible species, offering ample space, enrichment and advanced care facilities.
The project is part of the zoo’s commitment to conservation, education and providing exceptional animal care, the release stated.
Humboldt penguins, native to South America, are threatened by habitat loss and overfishing, while Chilean flamingos rely on increasingly fragile wetland ecosystems. The habitat will help visitors understand the challenges these species face and the importance of global conservation efforts.
Donations from the public will directly support:
— Construction of the new habitat to replicate natural environments for both species.
— Educational programming to inspire conservation awareness in visitors of all ages.
— Enhanced veterinary facilities to provide care for the penguins and flamingos.
Opening in 1978, the Cape May County Park & Zoo is one of the nation’s top-ranked zoos, home to more than 250 species and dedicated to conservation, education and recreation. The zoo is open every day except Christmas and is free to enter and park.
Every donation helps bring the Zoological Society closer to its goal. Contributions can be made online at capemayzoosociety.org/donate or by mailing checks to Cape May Zoological Society, PO Box 864, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
