CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Cape May County is listed as one of the top tourism counties in the United States and a powerhouse of the American Travel Economy, according to Travel and Tour World (TTW) digital magazine.
The May 2025 edition of TTW, an international tourism publication, recently highlighted a shift in America’s travel trends.
“While major cities often grab the headlines, it’s the counties, the local gems, that are quietly stealing the spotlight in 2024. From pristine beaches to rolling mountains, several U.S. counties have emerged as tourism giants, drawing millions each year and redefining the perfect vacation experience,” according to the publication.
The top U.S. counties recognized as tourism titans also include Sevier County, Tenn.; Door County, Wis.; Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Orange County, Fla.; and Holmes County, Ohio.
Cape May County stands out as a premier tourism destination in the United States, based on its significant economic impact, high visitor numbers and diverse appeal, according to the publication.
“Cape May County’s recognition as a top tourism destination is a testament to our tourism leaders, business owners and community’s dedication to preserving the natural beauty and rich history of our region,” Cape May County Board of Commissioners Director Leonard Desiderio stated in a news release from the county. “We are proud to offer visitors an unparalleled vacation experience that keeps them coming back year after year.”
The county, once considered a hidden gem, has emerged as a vital vacation destination and a unique lifestyle choice, offering more than just stunning ocean and bay views, the releases stated.
“Its pristine beaches, iconic boardwalks, eco and natural areas, family-friendly resorts and historic attractions draw a wide range of visitors throughout the year,” according to the release.
A peninsula located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey, between the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, the county has a rich history of fishing and agriculture that continues to this day.
The port of Cape May/Wildwood is the largest commercial fishing port in New Jersey and the second largest along the eastern seaboard.”
Agriculture supports the tourism industry, supplying restaurants with locally grown produce and products and nurturing the growth of wineries, breweries and distilleries.
Cape May County had an 84 percent visitor return rate, generated $8.1 billion in visitor spending, collected $23 million in occupancy taxes and hosted 12.1 million visitors in 2024, which were factors that placed the county among the top leaders in tourism in the U.S.
